Living in Formentera
Formentera is an island and a single municipality at once, which is the thing to hold on to before anything else. INE gives it both an island code and a municipality code, and CEDOMU's list of town halls for Eivissa and Formentera records one ajuntament here. Because the two tiers describe the same ground, Idealista's municipality figure is a real island figure, and in its July 2026 report it is the highest of the Balearic entries Idealista prices at municipality level. Those are asking prices, not sale prices.
Of the four Balearic islands INE counts separately in its Censo Anual, Formentera has the smallest population: 11,690 at 1 January 2025. The revised padron for the same date gives 11,661, and the Estadistica Continua de Poblacion gives 11,556, lower rather than higher. On the Censo Anual, more than a third of residents were born abroad and well over a quarter hold a foreign nationality. Both figures are derived by subtracting INE's Spanish total from its overall total; INE publishes no foreign line.
The caution for a buyer is what is missing rather than what is printed. Idealista lists no districts for Formentera and prices none, so nothing there compares one part of the island with another. The island figure rose over the year by about a twenty-fifth, more slowly than the province-wide figure for Balears (Illes), though it sits roughly three quarters above it.
The verdict
Honestly considered, both sides.
The upside is real. So is the downside. Both matter more than any brochure will admit.
The case for
One island, one town hall
Formentera holds both an INE island code and an INE municipality code, and CEDOMU's list of town halls for Eivissa and Formentera records one ajuntament here. An island question and a municipal question have the same answer.
A price figure that really is the island's
Idealista's published Spanish levels run country, province, municipality, district and neighbourhood, with no island tier at all. Here the municipality and the island are the same place, so its July 2026 asking price covers the whole island.
A reference hospital on the island itself
IB-Salut gives Formentera its own health sector and names Hospital de Formentera as the sector's reference hospital, at Venda des Brolls, 07860 Formentera. We name a reference hospital, never a nearest one. Retrieved 1 September 2026.
A resident population largely born outside Spain
On the Censo Anual for 1 January 2025, more than a third of residents were born abroad, and Italy is the largest single foreign nationality recorded, ahead of Colombia, Morocco, Romania and Germany. Resident stock is not the same thing as who buys.
The case against
The dearest entry in Idealista's Balearic table
In its July 2026 report, Idealista's asking price for Formentera is the highest of the Balearic entries it prices at municipality level, and sits roughly three quarters above the province-wide figure for Balears (Illes).
No neighbourhood-level prices are published here
Idealista publishes no neighbourhood-level prices for this municipality: no districts are listed and none are priced, leaving a single row. Nothing in that data lets you compare one part of the island with another, and we will not invent a split.
No climate normals are published for Formentera
AEMET's normals publication for principal stations, covering 1981 to 2010, lists four entries under Illes Balears, and Formentera is not one of them. An observing station here, B986, publishes current observations rather than normals, so we print no climate table.
Sea routes are what our sources cover
Formentera is not among the airports in Aena's network list, and we found no official statement of absence to quote, so we report only what Aena lists. TIB publishes train and metro lines for Mallorca only.
Running costs are the thing we cannot show
We hold no rental index for the island, no utility, grocery or transport costs, and nothing on the housing stock, second homes or holiday lets. Anyone budgeting for life on a small island has to source all of that elsewhere.
Editor's note
Where you might be better off elsewhere
Formentera suits a buyer who has already decided on the island itself. If the deciding factor is price, or the wish to compare one area against another before committing, this is a difficult page to buy from: Idealista's July 2026 report puts its asking price at the top of the Balearic municipality entries, and publishes nothing below island level to break that down.
Three places worth looking at instead, all in the same report and all priced well below it. Palma de Mallorca, where Aena's network includes Palma de Mallorca (PMI) and TIB publishes the island's train and metro lines, though IB-Salut splits the city between two health sectors and we name no single reference hospital there. Maó and Ciutadella de Menorca, on an island where Aena's network includes Menorca (MAH), AEMET publishes 1981 to 2010 normals for a station, and IB-Salut names Hospital Mateu Orfila; note that Es Castell and Es Migjorn Gran carry no Idealista price. And Sant Antoni de Portmany, the lowest of the five Ibiza municipalities Idealista prices in that same report.
